Donte Whitner Hitner-gate update: 49er has to buy Whitner jersey inventory from Nike
In a still-developing saga that perhaps is getting more attention than it deserves — my bad — it looks like there remain a few hurdles before San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner will be able to don a jersey with his soon-to-be-changed last name of Hitner during an NFL game.
According to a TMZ report, the first issue is the time it takes for the State of Ohio — where Whitner filed name change documents — to process the request and finalize the change. This includes the need to publish a public notice in a “widely circulated publication” for a minimum of 30 days before a judge will sign an order granting the name change. Along with that, the entire process typically takes about six weeks.
Further, an NFL source told TMZ that before NIKE will produce “Hitner” jerseys, Whitner will have to buy up all remaining inventory of any “Whitner” jerseys already produced.
So, in the end, it’s going to take awhile. Seems like a lot of work. Hopefully it pays off for Whitner in the end in some way, shape or form.
