PETA accuses NFL of animal cruelty, adds bleeding rat to shield logo (photo)
News flash: PETA has done something that lacks subtlety. Might want to take a seat before you begin to feel lightheaded.
In a press release, PETA accuses the NFL of funding and performing awful experiments on animals for research on sports injuries. Yeah.
n excerpt from the release:
For years, the National Football League Foundation, formerly known as NFL Charities, has quietly funded horrific and deadly sports-injury experiments on dogs, mice, rats, and other animals at Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California–Los Angeles, the University of Notre Dame, and other schools and private laboratories.
These projects, many of which are ongoing, are crudely designed to recreate injuries on the football field. They have involved inflicting severe knee injuries on dogs, after which the animals are killed and have their legs cut off; repeatedly slamming heavy weights into rats’ heads to create brain and spinal cord injuries and skull fractures; and cutting open the heads of mice and delivering crushing blows to cause traumatic brain injuries. Many animals have even died during the studies because of the severe injuries that they sustained.
Oh, and if you want to see a rat getting its head repeatedly crushed by a metal bar, PETA attached an animated GIF of it to its release.
Shocking allegations, to be sure. If accurate, it will be yet another black eye for a league that seems unable to get out from under its own self-created controversies.
It will be interesting to see if Roger Goodell and the NFL responds to the allegations, if at all. Although it is likely that the league will be none too pleased with the use of the shield logo without the expressed written consent of the National Football League. So three’s that.
