Landon Donovan leads U.S. to win…GAH! WHAT’S WRONG WITH HIS EYE?!? (pic)
The United States defeated Mexico by a score of 2-0 in front of the home country fans in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday. A momentous win, to be sure, as it qualified the Americans for the 2014 World Cup.
The score, referred to as “Dos a cero,” is the fourth consecutive time the U.S. has defeated Mexico in World Cup qualifier matches by that very score in Columbus, as the squad previously defeated Mexico 2-0 in World Cup qualifiers in 2001, 2005 and 2009. Pretty weird.
But not as weird as Landon Donovan looked on the pitch throughout the evening. Donovan reportedly was dealing with a gnarly eye infection, even avoiding the U.S. media on Monday because of it.
Additional evidence of the nastiness follows.
The day in hiding evidently did little good to reduce the disturbing appearance of the eye infection — or, if it was better than the day before, one can only wonder how terrible it looked then — as it still looked horrible during play on Tuesday (via @DanSudkamp):
Yikes. Despite the infection, Donovan still led the way, scoring a goal in the huge win.
Here’s looking at you, Landon Donovan…
No, I’m over here. Over here, Landon. Yes, with your good eye. Look at me with your good eye. There you go.
