Old Spice unquestionably has stepped up its advertising game over the past several years, increasing its relevance and evolving from a product that one thinks a grandpa would use into a line of men’s care products that is hip and happening and something the younger set would be interested in purchasing.
Old Spice has done it again with a series of commercials starring Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker. In the three-spot series, Welker is trapped inside a snow globe in a dollar store, takes a 40-minute shower at halftime, missing the entire second half and best of all, has his legs eaten off by lizards.
Ha. What makes the series so effective and funny is that any of the scenarios that play out in those spots would make it extremely difficult to be a successful NFL player. Or any human being, for that matter. I know I wouldn’t want to live in a snow globe, that’s for sure. And having one’s legs eaten off by lizards probably wouldn’t be too fun, either. Yeah.
The series encompasses a campaign from ad agency Wieden+Kennedy called “Uneccessary Freshness” that is slated to begin airing during 2013 NFL Kickoff festivities on Thursday when the Baltimore Ravens take on the Denver Broncos. Great stuff.
