Oakland Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson made arguably one of the best catches of the season with a sensational catch during the sixth inning of his team’s tilt against the Texas Rangers at O.co Coliseum on Tuesday.
Rangers left fielder David Murphy sent a pop up deep into the outer reaches of the vast, wide open spaces that define O.co Coliseum’s colossal foul territory.
Donaldson continued to track the pop-up but it appeared that the ball was going to end up in the seats along the third base line.
But there was just enough space for Donaldson to make a slick diving grab as he snagged the ball just as it went over the padded railing. Donaldson’s momentum then carried him not just over the infield tarp, but behind it, as he ended up between it and the wall, practically disappearing from view entirely.
Fantastic play. Unfortunately, the A’s came up short, losing to the Rangers by a score of 4-1, losing a share of possession of first place in the AL West. Oakland now trails Texas by one with the rubber game of the teams’ three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.
