Sitting in bullpen, Luis Ayala catches Justin Upton’s homer in his hat (video)

Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Luis Ayala was minding his own business on Wednesday night, chilling alongside his fellow relievers in the bullpen when his teammate, outfielder Justin Upton mashed an offering from Washington Nationals right-hander Fernando Abad during the top of the 7th inning with the score tied at two apiece.

As the ball came bearing down upon the bullpen, Ayala leaped to his feet, moved over a few steps and snagged the long ball in his cap.

Upton’s solo shot gave the Braves a 3-2 lead and the team held on for a 6-3 win at Nationals Park. But the play of the day came from Ayala, whose savvy, heads-up play required no use of a thinking cap, just a regular one.

And if you’re experiencing a sense of deja vu, Ayala did the same thing last September when he was a member of the Baltimore Orioles:

Mad cap skills, man.
