Miller Park security hassles Brewers fan over Ryan Braun ‘Fraud’ shirt (pic)

A female Milwaukee Brewers fan attending a recent game at Miller Park was singled out by ballpark security after they noticed she had modified her Ryan Braun shirt to read “FRAUD” on the back, replacing the recently suspended left fielder’s last name.

According to a report from Milwaukee’s TMJ-4 news, Karen Eidem was told by security that she either had to either remove the article of clothing or be ejected from Miller Park. In a reluctant compromise, Eidem elected to turn the shirt inside out.

Said Eidem: “I mean it was obviously meant as a joke, but to put me in a position where I’m the one to be perceived as doing something wrong, that kind of bothered me.”

Of course, once news of how unfairly she had been treated started being reported, the Brewers quickly issued a statement admitting it was a terrible mistake.

The statement:

“In this case, the fan absolutely should have been able to wear the jersey without any intervention by our staff. We welcome the opportunity for fans to express their opinions. The only circumstances that would warrant us intervening is if someone were to display a message or item that would be considered offensive to other fans. This is not a case where that line was crossed, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience to her. We will reach out to Ms. Eidem to invite her to another game this year as our guest.”

Yeah, poor form on this one. Especially in light of the fact that for all intents and purposes, the shirt was arguably a completely accurate assessment of Ryan Braun.

On Friday, Brewers COO Rick Schlesinger discussed the incident on 620 WTMJ and continued the “our bad” line of reasoning by saying, “That was really just a misjudgment by our staff.  We’re going to reach out to that woman, apologize to her, bring her back.  We respect the right of the people to come in and express their views.  Something of that nature is permissible, and she should not have been addressed and threatened with leaving.  That was a mistake on our staff.”

Schlesinger continued: “That is not a situation that we should have done anything with.  We were wrong.”

TMJ-4 reports that Eidem bears no ill will towards the ball club and intends to take up the Brewers on the offer to attend another game as the team’s guest.
