Lightning strikes Gateway Arch during rain delay of Royals-Cardinals game (vid)
The St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals managed to play a nine-inning baseball game in a crisp 2 hours and 27 minutes on Thursday night. Unfortunately, a 4 1/2 hour rain delay occurred smack dab in the middle of the game and play wasn’t restarted until 3:04 a.m. St. Louis time and the game wasn’t in the books until 3:14 a.m. A long night at the ballpark, indeed.
The seemingly eternal evening had its own rewards for the Royals, because in the end, the team’s 4-2 win snapped the squad’s eight-game losing streak. So there’s that. The Cardinals? That’s a long time sitting around the clubhouse waiting to retake the field only to take a loss.
Meanwhile, Mother Nature put on her own fireworks display of sorts during the rain delay. The broadcast crew showed video of a gigantic lighting bolt striking either the Gateway Arch or incredibly near to it, creating an awe-inspiring image of monument sitting majestically in the background of an emptied Busch Stadium.
Awesome. Too bad we couldn’t hear the boom from that bad boy.
