Susannah Collins, the former Comcast SportsNet Chicago reporter who was fired by the company last week, released a statement on Tuesday acknowledging how “Sports Nutz,” a web series she participated in before becoming a Chicago Blackhawks sideline reporter, could be considered offensive and apologized for her role in it.

The “Sports Nutz” videos, which came to light after a now-infamous on-air gaffe when Collins said the Chicago Blackhawks enjoyed a “tremendous amount of sex during the regular season” when she meant a tremendous amount of “success,” was summarily dismissed from her job as her Freudian slip attracted national attention, leading many to suspect that it was her on-air mistake that led to her firing. Comcast SportsNet Chicago’s statement announcing her dismissal disputed that assertion which indicated she was fired for “circumstances unrelated to her on-air remarks.”

While no one will never know for sure, the fact that Collins specifically addresses the “Sports Nutz” videos in her released statement could signify that the videos — which some have criticized as being politically incorrect, sexually explicit and racially insensitive — more than her flub provoked Comcast SportsNet Chicago to fire her.Collins’ statement, in which she discusses her ill-fated participation in the “Sports Nutz” video series, via the Chicago Tribune:

“The intention of that show was to present a satirical, tongue-in-cheek approach to sports but, unfortunately, some of the material it contained was off-color and offensive,” Collins said in her statement Tuesday. “I understand why some may have been offended by it and for this I am truly sorry.

“It has always been my dream to cover my hometown teams on the network I loved watching.  I have worked tirelessly to develop my skills as a sports reporter, anchor and host, and I want to thank the city of Chicago for allowing me that opportunity.”

Once again, much like she did when her “tremendous amount of sex” misstep achieved viral status, Collins has demonstrated a significant amount of class in handling her dismissal, as her statement indicates regret but ultimately only expresses gratitude for the opportunity Comcast SportsNet afforded her.
