San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh recently expressed concern that Colin Kaepernick has been hitting the weights a bit too hard this offseason, resulting in the team’s young quarterback becoming too muscular. And no, Harbaugh’s concern isn’t that Kaepernick’s arm tattoos are beginning to look all weird and stretchy. The source of Harbaugh’s worries likely stem from the fact that, like pitchers, a quarterback becoming too bulky can have a negative effect on his play.
Boy, I know how that goes — being too muscular and bulky stuff. In fact, I’ve had to cut back the daily bicep curls by 50%, and it hasn’t had much of an effect on my mass or reps. Cutting my biceps curls by 50%, you see, means I am still doing a whopping zero arm curls each day.
But that doesn’t appear to be the case with Kaepernick, or his 49ers teammates, apparently. The team as a whole reportedly has been hitting the gym hard this offseason, likely resulting from the bitter taste left in the mouth of each and every player on the roster who was on the field when the 49ers came up short against the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII.
“I never had to concern myself with that because the players we have, the coaches we have. They’re already back in the building,” Harbaugh said. “Justin Smith is already, arm in a sling, champing at the bit to get back. Colin Kaepernick is already working out, pulling chains. So it’s not a challenge for me.”
But Harbaugh nevertheless did single out Kaepernick possibly overdoing it a bit, saying, “”If you’re just talking about weightlifting and upper-body strength, yes, I think there is that fear.”
He adds, “It’s something we’ve talked about. ‘I don’t want you getting too jacked-up, Colin.’ I want some speed, quickness, not just (flexing chest his muscles).”
It makes perfect sense that the 49ers coach is a bit leery over the team’s franchise quarterback becoming too pumped up to where he resembles some kind of beefy weightlifter, but would Harbaugh prefer that to Kaepernick partying down in on a cruise ship and having women do body shots off of him during the offseason? Actually, the latter is definitely preferable. It works for Rob Gronkowski, right?
Wait. Don’t answer that.
Meanwhile, instead of emulating Kaepernick’s weight room work ethic and his apparently ever-increasing biceps, why not affix some KaeperTats to your arms and imitate his tattoos? Works for me.
