High school player’s grandma allegedly takes rap for his bad performance in game

DuVal

Bad games can happen, often at the most inopportune of times. It’s the nature of competition. Sometimes, everything can go right for a player, other times? Not so much. Michael Cunningham, the leading scorer for Goddard (Md.) DuVal High, had an uncharacteristically underwhelming performance in its Class 4A boys baksetball regional finals game against Upper Marlboro (Md.), scoring only six points as his team was throttled by a score of 85-54.

DuVal head coach Lafayette Dublin took it in stride, saying, “That’s playoff basketball,” adding,. “You always know that can happen. It’s always in your mind. You just hope that it’s not you.”

But that doesn’t mean that one person who wouldn’t be expected to have such a critical impact on the game doesn’t guiltily feel a measure of responsibility for the team’s horrible game, in particular one Michael Cunningham. And that person is Cunningham’s grandmother, who allegedly issued a mea culpa of sorts in the most logical place possible: In the comments section of a newspaper report.

Grandma’s apparent comments on The Washington Post story, via Deadspin by way of Prep Rally:

I just wanted to go on record in defense of my grandson’s, Michael Cunningham, weak performance last night by letting readers know that he was battling a severe cold. He called me early in the day and asked could I bring him cough medicine or something because his throat was sore and he was stopped up but he wanted to be at the game. I found out when I got to school that he also had a fever. I should have taken him home but being the kind of person he is, a total team player, he insisted he would be better by game time. I left him some mild over the counter medicine but had no idea that he hadn’t eaten all day because his throat eas sore so I feel totally responsible for his lackluster performance last night. Now know this, this is not an excuse because basketball is a team sport and last night the best TEAM won. I just wanted everyone to know why Michael was so off his game.

Michael Cunningham’s grandma: You rock. Although I wonder how pleased this young man is about his grandma coming to his defense in a newspaper’s comments section and that story being picked up nationally. No one is going to give him a hard time about that, right?
