I have been watching hockey for essentially my entire life — I’m from Minne-SOH-Tah, duh — and I cannot recall a time when an NHL head coach has drawn a penalty for making stupid faces at the officials. Savagely berating them? Sure. Throwing crap out on the ice? Most definitely. But for making a “derp face”? Nope.
Well, I can cross that off my list of “Things I Have Never Seen” (yes, it was on there — my list is quite extensive), as the Tampa Bay Lightning’s exquisitely named head coach, Guy Boucher, drew a bench minor for abuse of officials for that very thing late in the third period during the team’s tilt against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.
Trailing 2-1 and already down a player with Martin St. Louis in the penalty box, Adam Hall was sent to the sin bin for a high stick after the officials on the ice missed what Boucher clearly believes to be an icing call on the Devils. And that’s when the magic happened.
And the GIF goodness:
Things unraveled a bit following Boucher’s Herpy Derpy Man display and the Lightning ultimately fell to the Devils by a score of 4-2. Following the game, when asked to comment on exactly what transpired, Boucher said, “I will certainly not comment on that.” Good call, but if I had my guess and if Boucher’s earlier display was any indication, his face told a different story.
