A’s second baseman Cliff Pennington named ‘Creator of the One-Man Dog Pile’ (photo)
The Oakland Athletics narrowly avoided elimination from the MLB playoffs by the slimmest of margins, staging an incredible comeback against the Detroit Tigers by storming back with three runs in the bottom of 9th inning for a thrilling and improbable 4-3 win. By doing so, the A’s tied the ALDS series at two games apiece and forced a decisive Game 5 on Thursday night.
The burst of clutch runs was capped by Coco Crisp’s walkoff single, and after Seth Smith crossed home plate, pandemonium ensued as both the A’s and the team’s fans in the Coliseum erupted in a raucous celebration. And that is when A’s second baseman Cliff Pennington comes into the narrative.
An image of the A’s enveloping the hero Crisp near first base shows how Pennington somehow managed to find himself some distance away from the horde of his jubilant teammates, well up the first base line, after taking a bit of a tumble (you can see the beginning of the DERP! in the above photo). Not only that, the image also captures Pennington taking a spill and while it is unknown how he found himself biting it in the dirt, the image itself is unquestionably hilarious.
A’s pitcher Brandon McCarthy was forwarded the photo on Twitter, and from that, Pennington was unceremoniously bequeathed with the moniker, “Creator of the One-Man Dogpile.”
Hilarious. And while it could be considered an embarrassing image for Pennington, right now, I bet he couldn’t care less.
