In the 4th inning of Monday night’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros, Jon Jay turned in a highlight reel-worthy play by exhibiting a never-give-up attitude as he attempted to corral a ball hit nearly directly at him that bounced, caromed and ultimately bare-handed by the Cardinals center fielder.
With no outs and the Cards leading 4-1, an offering by pitcher Lance Lynn was hit on a rope to center field. Jay initially leaned in a bit on the smoked shot, but began to retreat after realizing the ball was about to go right over his head. Jay leaped and the ball tipped off the top of his glove and ss he was falling to the ground, he desperately stuck out his left hand and bobbled the ball before finally snagging it.
Said Jay following the Cardinals’ 6-1 victory: “I’m just happy it ended up in my hand,” before adding, “I’m happy the recovery was good.”
Indeed. Jay deserves some style points for that grab, although it’s likely he would have preferred that the catch was more of the conventional variety.
