On Thursday, for the first-time ever during Tropicana Field’s storied history, a “Star Trek Night” was held. Tampa Bay Rays fans were encouraged to dress up in their favorite Star Trek-themed attire and various Star Trek-related activities were planned for the event, including when Ragar the Klingon threw out the first pitch (via).
Fans dressed as Klingons, Borgs, Vulcans, Cardassians (no, not Kardashians, that would be soooo lame) and their favorite Star Trek characters from the franchise’s many series and movies came out in droves for the can’t-miss pairing of “Star Trek Night” and the rival Boston Red Sox coming to town. Just how many, you ask? Tons. 12,963, to be exact, which is considered packing them in at the Trop.
Apparently, the atmosphere created by “Star Trek Night” was a catalyst for the hometown Rays, as Tampa Bay scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the BoSox by a score of 7-4. I guess you could say the “Force” was with them.
What’s that? Haha, I was just kidding. I know that’s not from Star Trek. In fact, I’m a huge Star Trek fan, actually, The Next Generation specifically. I’ve even attended a convention once and on another occasion, waited in line at the Mall of America to get an autograph from Marina Sirtis, the gorgeous woman who portrayed the Betazoid-human stunner Deanna Troi on TNG.
Yep. I’m a nerd. But I’ve never heard William Shatner tell me to “Get a life,” so I got that going for me. Which is nice.
And yes, I made that reference just so I could embed the classic Saturday Night Live sketch. Sue me.
