The Great Big Good Bye Farewell Tour of one Chipper Jones keeps on churning, as the Atlanta Braves made a stop this week in Miami for a three-games series with the Marlins. On the final game of the series on Wednesday night, the Marlins organization paid its respects to Chipper and his marvelous, Hall of Fame-worthy career, a gesture that featured a video tribute and the presentation of a nifty fly fishing rod among other gifts during a pregame ceremony.
But perhaps the most gracious token of the Marlins franchise’s appreciation for Chipper was how he was included in the routine Kiss Cam presentation during the game.
In the 7th inning, the Kiss Cam operator directed the camera into the visitors dugout, where Jones was seated on the bench. Once teammates Dan Uggla and Freddie Freeman realized the Kiss Cam was locked in on Chipper, the duo accosted the Braves legend, each planting smooches on the cheeks of the soon-to-be retiree.
It was quite the amusing scene, although if that freaky scene doesn’t ever occur again during his farewell tour, I’m pretty sure Chipper wouldn’t mind that outcome in the least.
