The Los Angeles Galaxy joined President Barack Obama in the East Room of the White House visit to celebrate their 2011 MLS Cup championship and while Obama made the unfortunate comment that the Galaxy are “the Miami Heat of soccer” (is that a good thing?), he did craft a couple of superb zinger aimed at the Galaxy’s elder statesman, David Beckham.
Obama’s first joke about Beckham had to do with the soccer player’s age (via USA Today):
“We also have a young up-and-comer on the team, a guy named David Beckham,” Obama said. “I have to say I gave David a hard time — I said half his teammates could be his kids.”
He then turned to the midfielder.
“We’re getting old, David.”
And wrapped up his mini-roast of Beckham by poking fun at Beckham’s racy ads for his H&M underwear line in light of the spots that aired during the Super Bowl in February:
“He is tough,” Obama said. “In fact, it is a rare man who can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear.”
Zing! But in the end, a grand time was had by one and all. Galaxy captain Landon Donovan presented the President with a soccer ball and a Galaxy jersey with his name and the No. 1 on the back. But the Galaxy’s visit to the White House likely will be remembered for Obama’s razzing of the British soccer-playing import. I wonder if they all went out afterward and had a “Strawberry…Banana…Smoothie” at Burger King. Seems fitting.
