In honor of MC Hammer’s 50th birthday, the A’s tweeted a pic of him as team ballboy
And now, from the “How Old Does This Make You Feel?” department comes the news that Stanley Kirk Burrell, who rose to fame as “rapper” MC Hammer, is celebrating his birthday today, March 30.
As you may have known, Hammer grew up in Oakland, Calif. and during his youth would hang out in the parking lot of Oakland Coliseum. On one day, team team owner Charles O. Finley saw the then 11-year-old doing his thing n the lot and decided to hire him as a clubhouse assistant and batboy, a position he held from 1973-1980 (thanks, Wikipedia!).
Of course, Hammer’s rise to the top of the pop charts in the late ’80s/early ’90s was meteoric and his plummet to irrelevancy and financial ruin were just as astounding.
So, on this day, let us all celebrate MC Hammer’s 50th birthday by perhaps listening to Hammer’s seminal album, Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em, dancing like a goofball and filing bankruptcy. Okay, maybe not the last one.
