Condemned man’s words after receiving lethal injection: ‘Go Cowboys!’

Jesse Joe Hernandez, a convicted child sex offender who was in prison for the murder of Karlos Borja, a 10-month-old boy he was baby-sitting 11 years ago, was executed Wednesday by lethal injection. A person’s individual and personal views of capital punishment notwithstanding, what this convicted murderer said upon administration of the toxic cocktail that would ultimately — and quickly — lead to his death was incredibly bizarre: he mentioned his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys. Certainly not the manner in which the Cowboys like to get their name in the news, to be sure.

NBC Dallas-Fort Worth describes the macabre scene (via Off the Bench):

“God bless everybody. Continue to walk with God,” the 47-year-old Hernandez said. Moments later, he shouted “Go Cowboys!” in honor of his favorite football team.

As the drugs took effect, the condemned man repeated his appreciation for those he knew who had gathered to witness the execution. “Love y’all, man,” Hernandez said. “… Thank you. I can feel it, taste it. It’s not bad.”

He took about 10 deep breaths, which grew progressively weaker until he was no longer moving. Ten minutes later, at 6:18 p.m. CDT, he was pronounced dead.

Gotta support the team. Yikes.

Oh boy, now we hear that executions “are not that bad!” One of the last vestiges left to man that the state execution was not something to look forward to might be on it’s way out now!! That’s all we need in a country that has a generation coming up who believe that death is not final! Oh wonderfu…keep those deathrow announcements up front for everyone to enjoy!!

This is a story about a man that comitted a crime payed his price for the crime, and likes the cowboys, thats it.I don’t even know if this qualifies as a sports story, I think it’s just a dumb story not even worthy of reporting about, actually i believe i’m the dumb one for even making this or any comment about the story, I mean the original writer of this story should be fired like right now…

        Kuta,

You just showed your ignorance. There is a reason Texas leads the nation in jobs. More industries are moving their fortune 500 businesses here. Not because we are morons, but because we know how to handle our business. By the way, I find it ironic that while the majority of the nation protests our death penalty record here in Texas the majority of you appear to be celebrating it here. All because a Dallas Cowboy fan who happened to be a murdering child molestor was sentenced to death. What disturbs me is that most of you appear to be thankful that a Cowboy fan was given lethal injection and you appear to be ignoring what he did to get that injection. So who’s uneducated here…Me thinks it’s you.

there are 3 reasons that Texas leads the nation in jobs

          1) Like you said youknow how to handle your business

          2) Your Gov Rick Perry

          3) and, let’s see. I can’t. The third one, I can’t. Sorry. Oops.

Only in Texas can this happen. The state that gleefully hands down death sentences and carries them out is a piss poor place to live. The Cowboys and Texans are two of my most hated teams purely because they are in Texass the number 1 legal murder state in the union. I laugh at every thing that happens to Texass that is bad. I am sure glad that I live in the Northwest here in Washington state where we are a bit more civilized with the death penalty.

      • Christopher

        March 30, 2012 at 3:40 am

Oh yea..? Considering that Global Warming has been proven wrong. The Farmers’ Almanac proved that the Earth has actually dropped 1 degree(for an entire planet, that’s a lot).
We live for ourselves down here in Texas, we don’t rely on “supposedly intellectual” lawyers to do it for us. We have a more stable economy due to private industry, whereas all, if any, of you’re states growth comes from federal funding. We in Texas believe in a person’s ability to achieve for themselves, and defending what we achieve(thank God for the 2nd amendment). Liberals, such as yourself, have no innovation. You believe in the “collective salvation” of society, meaning you rely on others to do for you. We in Texas have what is called common sense; something that a majority of Americans lack.

      Makes me just cry!

I would have stuffed a sock in his mouth and prevented him from speaking at all! Also, death row sickos should not have the “luxury” of loved ones being able to be there for the lethal injection. The small little child did not have any loved ones with him!
      Signed,

  32. ddddd

    March 30, 2012 at 2:28 pm

I love how people on multiple sides of the issue have their opinions on this…. LOL…. Ok so do we know the details of the crime? Probably not. Texas has a reputation of the “somebody’s gotta fry for this” syndrome. Was evidence planted? Did the guy get a crappy pro bono attourney handling the case? Nevertheless…….
The facts are…. guilty, not guilty, insane or otherwise this man was convicted by a jury of his peers and sentenced to death for the crimes set forth. He said “Go Cowboys” on his deathbed. Therefore it makes news as opposed to the hundreds of other people put to death in the state of Texas and other death penalty states.
To say obscene statements such as “……. one less cowboy fan” takes away from the realities of the situation. He likes a team…. So what! I bet that the family of the victim didn’t give a rats blank whether or not he was a cowboy fan. They just wanted closure. Leave it at that!
