College Golf Team Suspended After Posing Nude For Unofficial Team Photo

The key word for the above photo shoot was tasteful, hence the reason why every member of the Bethany College golf team had golf clubs (with covers) strategically covering their man parts. Unfortunately, much like George Costanza and his foray into the timeless art of seduction, the team obviously put their trust in the wrong person.

Bethany College, a small liberal arts school located in Lindsborg, Kansas and is affiliated with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), had quite the controversy erupt when the above photo began circulating depicting the entire golf team in the buff, posing for a photo for what is being referred to as an unofficial team photo.

Imagine the shock and dismay experienced by Bethany College athletic director Jon Daniels (who also happens to serve as the school’s golf coach – ugh) when this photo showed up in his email inbox.

From a report (via Off the Bench):

“I had no idea they were doing it,” Daniels said. “After one of (the golfers) put it on Facebook, then it got sent to me.

“I’ve been around a long time and I think this is a case of young people who just don’t think beyond the moment and don’t realize who they’re hurting.

“Until someone sat them down and explained that they did something wrong, they didn’t have any idea,” Daniels said. “But I think they understand now.”

Oh, the team understands now all too well. You see, Daniels had no choice but to suspend the entire team for three tournaments, a move which will no doubt be especially damaging to the season prospects for a team who, according to the report, has “won 11 of the last 15 KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletics Conference) championships. There are no plans to appeal the decision by any member of the team at this time.

But, as said above, this is what happens when you put your trust in the wrong person. One moment, you’re trying to relax and have a little fun during a photo shoot, the next thing you know, you’re captured on film for all perpetuity looking like this:

Ouch. Well, either that or pictured standing butt naked with a driver covering your genitals. One of the two.

I think their athletic department needs a better sense of humor. At least they all look fit….most people willing to pose without their clothes should not do so. Plus, they could go to the beach wearing speedos not covering much more and no one would care!

I agree with Debbie. Suspension seems harsh. I’m glad it’s only for 3 tournaments and not the whole season as I thought at first. Where was the harm? It was certainly meant to be funny, and shows the lack of big egos (along with the lack of other things). What would have been the administrations view if it was done to promote cancer awareness, or to raise money for a good cause? Does he turn his head when pictures of athletes with bottles of beer or cigarettes show up on Facebook? I’d rather the smoking and underage drinking was dealt with, as they have the capacity for serious harm. Keep things in perspective.

I see at all wrong with the picture of these guys. I think the pic. was tastefully done. And…it was a big joke – all in fun. What is so wrong with that?

As a Bethany alum, I see no harm in the photo. As said above, it was all for fun. Plus, when else have you read about Bethany in national news?!

Great photo guys. Lindsborg KS – where the heck is that? I agree with Alex – great PR move to the school. Too bad some “idiots” can not see the fun in anything anymore. Kids now adays can’t do anything “outside” the box – I would hate being a kid in school – everything is black/white – no gray areas anymore. I remember growing up in a small town school – every boy had a jack-knife, you could smoke on school grounds (actually in the school if you were of age), drink at 18, settled an argument with your fists – and when you were done – hung out that night! My kids couldn’t even take a plastic knife in their lunch for school because it was a “weapon”! Are you kidding me?!?!?! If someone is going to do something – they can make a weapon out of about anything (wire from your notebook – stab you with a sharp pencil – etc. Get over it people!

Given all the things we could really be up in arms about college kids doing, the fact that this caused “shock and dismay” is so incredibly sad. Good kids, having good clean fun. Shame on Bethany for taking itself too seriously.

Are you folks at Bethany nuts? I never heard of you before. Now I have because of this harmless college student prank. I (and many others) did a lot worse years ago!

Anybody who was “hurt” definitely needs some counseling.

This was not only tasteful… look at the faces on ALL those young men…they seem to be having a great time…. with all the crazy things they could have been doing, this is a great marketing tactic and the school should be thanking them…. some good clean fun and great team spirit…. reverse that punishment and give all of them a break on next years tuition.

Agree with all above – thank god that’s all these kids did, compared with some of the other crap college athletes pull! Plus, at least they’re in shape – unlike most older golfers like me!

Solidarity!!! I hope every golfer has the guts to take a pic and post it online!!! It starts with me!!! Flood their inboxes!!!

I hope more people respond to push the school to NOT suspend the golf team for a picture that was meant to bring some light to a sport that until, David Feherty on the Golf Channel, lacks a sence of humor and fun. Give the kids a break ……

I support the suspension whole-heartedly. This was tasteless behavior from a group of students who need to learn proper boundaries. College is about education and preparation for the real world. Aside from the sex industry, how many employers would let such behavior abide without reprimand?

Should the team be crucified? Certainly not! But a good lesson is one that “hits ‘em where it hurts”…their love of the game of golf.

R U Kidding Me??? I am sure that the Gent that suspended them has a lot more in his closet……3 tourneys is ridiculous….maybe 1/3 of the team rotated for 3 tourneys……who did it hurt?? Who did it offend?? The minority of course….so these guys have to pay to satisfy the minority. Sick of it.

Clearly, the old fogies who decided to suspend the golf team are (a) lousy golfers, (b) out of shape, and (c) jealous of the kids who are having a little fun. Maybe the thinking is “I’m too old to have fun anymore, so I don’t want anyone else to either”.

What an absurd over-reaction by that AD. Just who exactly was hurt by this (not remotely racy) photo? Ummm…that’d be NOBODY. It was apparently just a harmless–yes, harmless–prank. Big deal. At least the guys are probably really popular on campus right now. Still, suspending them from 3 tournaments is ludicrous. Reminds me of that even-more absurd story of that high school coach who was fired because–horrors!–his male track team practiced shirtless in hot weather. Lunacy is rampant in this country.

in my point year it seems as if they did was not wrong but for one thing they are in college not high school and they should be mature and act responsible, plus being in college and that age they all know there are nourishment for actions and well yeah speedos are different because its part of their dress, golfers don’t golf naked.

I believe there is nothing wrong with posing with thier weapon of mass destruction. Women golfer loves to pose naked too. Its simply unfair and bias. Bet you these golfers will make more money in Playgirl now that they are exposed. Good luck, fellow golfers!!

I don’t know if they should be suspended or not. It depends on the schools code of conduct, whether they did it on school grounds, whether they indicated it was a team photo and thus made it an affiliation with the school. If they did it as just a bunch of friends, the school shouldn’t suspend them. If they did it as the golf team then sure they should be suspended. If they did it on school grounds, I would suspend them.

What are these young men doing that could POSSIBLY harm their school, their fellow students or themselves?! This picture is not in the slightest bit indecent. Nothing is being revealed that isn’t visible at any beach or pool or park or back yard in the country. These students’ only “mistake” was in going to a college run by religious puritanicals who believe that sexuality and the human body are shameful. The Bethany College powers-that-be are the ones who should be ashamed…for dumping their sexual guilt and self-loathing on those who they are supposed to be educating and developing. And for punishing these kids for swinging their 9 irons, while they sit in their offices with their shriveled up 3 woods.

MK–what are these young men doing that could possibly harm their school? Ummmm, creating a sexual harrassment complaint? What if one of the young men in this photo did *not* do it voluntarily but was pressured to go along? What if this happened on school grounds (I assure you that being naked, outdoors, on school grounds is a huge issue)? What if the name of the school was being used–do you think that the parents of students are going to be thrilled to send their children to a college which has entire teams pulling stunts like this? What if this picture encourages copy-cat pictures by others at the school–similar pictures, especially a lot of them, could be a huge issue. What if these players future employers see this picture? I, for one, would not hire someone who would pose for a shot like this *and put it online with the name of the institution they represent.* Yes, this was a bad idea. Yes, it needs to be punished. No, the punishment should not be harsh–as long as 3 tournaments won’t ruin these young men’s year, then it is okay. If it would–then the suspension should be reduced–but the point is that they have to be punished for the sake of the school, the team’s reputation, and their own future jobs. Still, the punishment should be minor–this is small potatoes compared to something like the football team in Miami.

Who is the world are they hurting?? Is the coach a puritanical nut case? It’s only fun.
