Yet another sad, disturbing tale which confirms that we live in a society which is sadly populated by an inordinate amount of brutal, savage and heartless animals. Michael Schacht (above), 58, an usher at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, tragically passed away after pulling off the road while suffering a heart attack while driving home after an extra inning game on April 8th. Schacht was left to die in the street after a teenage suspect approached the vehicle, dragged him out of his car, robbed and carjacked him and left him in the street for dead. Jesus.
Police were led to the suspect because of an iPod inadvertently left at the scene of the crime. Via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:
The teenager, whose name is not being released, approached the car and found Schacht “in distress and slumped over the console,” said Kraus. The boy then “used a significant amount of force to remove Mr. Schacht from the car and placed him on the ground aggressively.”
After going through Schacht’s pockets and stealing his wallet, the teen drove off in his 2002 silver Hyundai Sonata, which was found the following day in Perry Hilltop, police said. The wallet was recovered from a sewer.
A passer-by found Schacht unresponsive and bleeding from a head injury. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side, where he was pronounced dead.
A spokesman for the Allegheny County Medical Examiner said that more tests are needed before a pathologist can determine the cause and manner of Schacht’s death.
What kind of sick world is this? While police say there is not enough evidence to charge the teenager with murder, he has been charged with
robbery of a motor vehicle and robbery, both felonies, and two counts of theft.
The grieving family of Schacht, who hoped the suspect would be tried as an adult, issued this statement on Tuesday night (via CBS Pittsburgh):
“Our family has learned that a 17-year-old suspect has been arrested for this heartless tragedy. Although, we are appreciative of certain events disclosed, we are devastated to learn that it will be handled in the juvenile court system. We can only hope that truth will prevail and justice be served.”
And while a conviction for these lesser crimes will unlikely afford Schacht’s family any measure of comfort relating to the indignity and inhumanity Michael Schacht had to suffer through before he died, hopefully they can take solace in the fact that if there is a Hell, the despicable creature – who can hardly be considered a human being – that perpetrated this crime is destined for one of the worst spots in it. Disgusting.
