Set to hit newsstands this Friday, ESPN The Magazine‘s second annual “Body Issue” will feature WNBA star Diana Taurasi on two variations of the issue’s seven covers – the one above and another showing Taurasi completely nude, covered only by a basketball which she is holding on her hip.
Taurasi told USA Today‘s Michael McCarthy that she’s happy she went through with the shoot, saying “I am who I am — whether I have clothes on or off. I’m still the same person.” Me too. The prudes at Denny’s didn’t necessarily see it that way in my pending case, but Taurasi’s comfort with her own body certainly settled any nerves over the subtly racy photos.
McCarthy was also lucky enough to grab a sneak peek at some of the images which will be in the special issue, and he passes along the other athletes who have landed one of the coveted cover photos, as well as some other athletes who will be featured in the mag:
There will be five other cover subjects: a dozen members of the USA Water Polo Women’s National team; Dutch wheelchair tennis player Esther Vergeer; New York Knicks star Amar’e Stoudemire; U.S. World Cup goalkeeper Tim Howard and PGA Tour golfer Camilo Villegas.
According to ESPN, other athletes featured in this year’s Body Issue include: tennis star Venus Williams; San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis; Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez; billiards player Jeanette “The Black Widow” Lee; Olympic skier Julia Mancuso; figure skater Evan Lysacek; surfer Kelly Slater; volleyball player Kim Glass; track and field athlete Rachel Yurkovich and former NFL running back Herschel Walker.
I have to be honest with you: not too shabby. When I read that Taurasi was going to be a covergirl for “The Body Issue,” I greeted the news that the WNBA superstar would be in the buff with a little trepidation, but the results above were definitely a welcome surprise. Taurasi gives a pretty good accounting of herself, so to speak. Just like I did at Denny’s. At least the manager was kind enough to give me my Grand Slam breakfast to go so I could eat it on the way to jail. That was nice.
