Without a moment to spare (okay, almost two months) before the regular season begins, the Las Vegas entry in the United Football League (the UFL for insiders like me) has a name, and boy it’s a doozy. From this point forward and for decades to come (or months), you will refer to them as the Las Vegas Locomotive.
UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue announced the name Monday and unveiled team uniforms of silver, blue and white. The name was selected after reviewing more than 30,000 fan entries.
30,000 entries? According to my math, that means the five people who care about the UFL franchise in Las Vegas entered 6,000 names? Impressive!
The Locomotive, coached by former New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel, will face San Francisco on October 8th. Oh yeah, San Francisco doesn’t have a name for their team yet. I wonder what a fitting name for an upstart football franchise in The City By The Bay could be called…
